Festivals in Aomori Introducing festivals representative of Aomori, beginning with Aomori City’s Nebuta Festival

Aomori City’s NEBUTA Festival

Visitors are entranced by the large heroic-looking floats, the cries of rassera, and the wild dancing of the festival participants (called haneto).

Gosyogawara TACHINEPUTA Festival

TACHI-NEPUTA, or “standing NEPUTA” floats—22 meters in height and 16 tons in weight—are paraded down the streets to the amazement of onlookers.

Hirosaki Snow Lantern Festival

At Hirosaki Park visitors can enjoy over 400 lanterns, huts and sculptures made of snow. When the park is lit up at night the scene resembles a fantasy world.

Cherry blossoms at night, Hirosaki Castle

Japan’s greatest cherry blossom festival, at a park filled with over 2600 cherry trees. Lit up at night, the park takes on a fantastic aura.

The fragrance of these orchids evokes the tropics.

Hiranai Town, Aomori Prefecture, Yogoshiyama-shinrin Park. Now is when the orchids are at their peak. The beauty of each orchid outdoes the previous. There are 2,000 orchids of 150 varieties. There also is a greenhouse for cacti and one for begonias. Visitors can enjoy these plants year-round.

The Hakkoda ropeway at the beginning of autumn.

The peak of Mt. Tamoyachidake in early October. In another week or so, the autumn foliage will be a sight to see.

The Hakkoda Mountains sparkle with trees covered in ice.

Take the 2459 meter ropeway up for ten minutes till you reach the station at the peak of the mountain. There you will see a cluster of trees covered in ice commonly called the “monster.” The clear blue sky and white snow.A panoramic view that extends all the way to Hokkaido.

A bath as nature made it, surrounded by hiba cypress trees. Location: Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture

②Tsubakikan, an inn frequented by Shiko Munakata.

This was a favorite inn of world famous woodblock print artist Shiko Munakata, a native of Aomori Prefecture. Location: Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture, Asamushi.

The Sannai-Maruyama Historical Site

Fished from the waters near the Oma cape, the Oma tuna is cut open and sold on the spot.

A regional specialty made with ingredients such as kon’nyaku (a root known as Devil’s tongue in English), carrots, burdock root, daikon radish, deep-fried tofu, butterbur sprouts, and kouri tofu (tofu freeze-dried by a natural process). The soup is flavored with miso.

Another specialty utilizes the shells of scallops from the Mutsu Bay. Egg and green onion are flavored with miso and dried small sardines and cooked on the scallop shells.

Mutsu Bay scallops are grilled in their shells until crisp and flavored with just a little soy sauce.

The head, meat, and entrails of the cod are separated and all are simmered in a soup along with daikon radish, carrots, hakusai cabbage, kon’nyaku root, and tofu. The soup is flavored with miso. During Aomori’s cold winters, the soup warms people from the core of their bodies.
